How in the world do I visually communicate an emotion that is so deeply personal and hyper-individualized for each person who experiences it? A question I quickly found myself asking after selecting the emotion of nostalgia to design a poster for to promote a fictitious performance at UNC Charlotte.
With my poster, the goal was to communicate the “double-sided,” as I called it, nature of being both happy and sad when feeling nostalgic. Using the contrasting images of a happy young girl and a wistful woman helped me to embody the way nostalgia feels in a visual form. Replicate that strange pang
you feel in your chest as you think about something past. Using starkly contrasting colors was another way to emphasize the double-sided nature of nostalgia, with the mirror being vibrant and
attention-grabbing and the dark purple feeling heavy and melancholic. I was then challenged to take
this visual language I had established and apply it to other forms outside of a poster such as a
sticker series and animated web ad.
